An attack on a police patrol in Iran’s restive southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan has left three police officers dead, The Caspian Post reports, citing Al Jazeera.

Initially, it was reported that one officer was killed and three others were wounded when “armed individuals opened fire on a police patrol” in the city of Zahedan.

The state-run broadcaster Press TV later reported that one of the injured officers had died from his wounds. Several hours afterward, Fars news agency confirmed that a third officer had also been killed.

The police command of Sistan and Baluchestan said efforts are underway to arrest the perpetrators of this assassination.

The province, which borders Pakistan and Afghanistan, has long been the site of frequent clashes between security forces and insurgents or smugglers.
