Azerbaijan, Brazil Committed to Strengthening Legal Framework for Relations

An Azerbaijani delegation led by Deputy Foreign Minister Elnur Mammadov paid a visit to Brazil on September 1. As part of the visit, the fifth round of political consultations between the Foreign Ministries of Azerbaijan and Brazil was held in Brasília.

The consultations were co-chaired by Deputy FM Elnur Mammadov and Secretary-General of Foreign Affairs of Brazil Maria Laura da Rocha, The Caspian Post reports, citing Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry.

The sides discussed the current state and future prospects of bilateral cooperation across political, economic, energy, transport, education, tourism, cultural and humanitarian spheres. They expressed mutual commitment to strengthening the contractual and legal framework of relations.

Maria Laura da Rocha congratulated Azerbaijan on the historic agreements reached at the Washington summit on August 8.

Deputy Minister Elnur Mammadov briefed the Brazilian side on the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace agenda, drawing attention to the closure of the OSCE Minsk Process and its structures by the OSCE Ministerial Council on September 1.

During the visit, Elnur Mammadov was received by Vice President of Brazil Geraldo Alckmin. Recalling his successful visit to Azerbaijan as head of the Brazilian delegation to COP29 last November and his meeting with President Ilham Aliyev, Alckmin emphasized the importance of expanding friendly and cooperative ties between the two countries. He also wished success to the political consultations and the first meeting of the Joint Working Group on Trade and Investment Cooperation between the two governments, held in Brazil.

Highlighting the growing interaction within the “COP Troika” format, Alckmin praised Azerbaijan’s contribution to the global climate agenda.

Deputy Minister Mammadov also met with Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira. The meeting hailed the successful development of bilateral political relations, noted a rise in trade, and emphasized progress in multilateral cooperation.

The visit saw the signing of the “Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Education between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the Federative Republic of Brazil”. The document was inked by Azerbaijani Ambassador to Brazil Rashad Novruz and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira.

Deputy Minister Elnur Mammadov also gave interviews to Brazil’s state news agency Empresa Brasil de Comunicação (EBC) and private television channel SBT.
