Georgia’s parliament has approved amendments to the country’s law on lotteries, gambling and prize games in the first reading, paving the way for casinos to host international tournaments.
Under the proposed amendments, an international tournament would be defined as a game organized by a licensed casino in which at least 70% of participants are foreign citizens, Sputnik Georgia reports.
Casinos seeking to organize such tournaments would be required to pay an annual fee of 100,000 Georgian lari (approximately $37,000).
Violations of the rules governing international tournaments would carry a fine of 50,000 lari (around $18,500).
The bill also proposes a tax exemption on tournament winnings for foreign participants if the prize pool exceeds 3 million lari (approximately $1.1 million).
The amendments have not yet become law. They must pass three readings in parliament and receive the president’s signature before taking effect.
