Georgia's prison system is facing unprecedented pressure, with the inmate population reaching a record level and only a handful of spaces remaining across the country's correctional facilities.

As of July 1, 2026, there were approximately 12,334 inmates in the country's penitentiary system-equivalent to 0.31% of Georgia's population, Sputnik Georgia reports.

Of the country's 14 operational prisons, only 12 beds remain available, while three correctional facilities have already exceeded their capacity.

The prison population includes 168 juveniles, 202 women, and 84 inmates aged over 70. Some 77.2% of prisoners have been convicted, while the remaining inmates are awaiting trial or sentencing.

Foreign nationals from 74 countries account for 14.8% of Georgia's total prison population, highlighting the international diversity of those held in the country's correctional facilities.
