Three oil tankers reportedly struck sea mines within the past 24 hours while attempting to pass through a prohibited route in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced the incidents, Tasnim reports.
The vessels’ crews switched off their radar and navigation systems and ignored warnings from military forces. The incidents reportedly triggered explosions and fires aboard the tankers.
The IRGC said the vessels were subsequently abandoned off the southern coast of the strait.
The military organization warned that the unauthorized southern route had been mined, adding that shipowners and crews would bear responsibility for attempting to use it.
The IRGC also threatened a decisive response to any actions Tehran considers provocations by the US.
