U.S. forces opened fire on an Iranian ship that came dangerously close to the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier earlier this week.

The engagement involved ship-mounted guns and two missiles launched from an attack helicopter, though officials have not confirmed which U.S. vessel fired on the Iranian ship. The status of the vessel and its crew remains unknown, The Caspian Post reports via foreign media.

The USS Abraham Lincoln was accompanied by two destroyers, the USS Spruance and USS Michael Murphy, as part of a U.S.-led military operation targeting Iranian forces. CENTCOM declined to comment on the incident.

Meanwhile, the second U.S. aircraft carrier, USS Gerald R. Ford, is deployed in the Red Sea, highlighting the growing U.S. naval presence amid heightened tensions with Iran.
