Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has discussed expanding investment cooperation with South Korea and attracting Korean expertise to major infrastructure projects in Kazakhstan.
During a meeting with Kim Bok-hwan, president and CEO of the Korea Overseas Infrastructure & Urban Development Corporation (KIND), Tokayev highlighted the corporation’s role in strengthening Kazakhstan-Korea economic ties, Qazinform reports.
The Kazakh president noted Kazakhstan’s interest in continuing cooperation with KIND, which previously participated in the development of the Big Almaty Ring Road (BAKAD), one of the country’s major transport infrastructure projects.
A key focus of the talks was KIND’s potential involvement in Alatau City, an ambitious urban development project. Tokayev emphasized the city’s significant potential and expressed hope that Korean companies would actively participate in infrastructure and investment initiatives there.
Tokayev also invited KIND to join Kazakhstan’s broader plans to modernize social and transport infrastructure across the country.
Kim Bok-hwan described Kazakhstan as a key transport and logistics hub in Eurasia and said KIND was ready to contribute to strengthening economic cooperation between Kazakhstan and South Korea.
The two sides also discussed plans to establish a Kazakhstan-Korea joint investment fund designed to attract Korean capital and technologies to infrastructure and energy projects.
Particular attention was given to the modernization of Kazakhstan’s transport and logistics network, including the development of the ports of Aktau and Kuryk and projects to build and renovate regional airports.
The meeting concluded with the exchange of several documents, including a memorandum of understanding between Caspian Group and KIND, an agreement between the Alatau City Authority and KIND on developing the master plan for the Alatau Smart City project, and a strategic agreement between Qazaqstan Investment Corporation and KIND.
