A fire and explosion at the construction site of Russia’s Amur Gas Chemical Complex in the Amur Region have killed one person and injured 123 others.

The victim was a Chinese national employed by a contractor working at the construction site, TASS reports.

Of 123 people injured, 19 were hospitalized with moderate to serious injuries. Some 104 people sought medical assistance for minor injuries, including cuts and bruises.

The fire broke out at an auxiliary technological section of a pyrolysis unit, according to reports. The blaze was later contained, and officials said there was no risk of it spreading further.

“According to the company, there is no risk of further spread of the fire, and controlled burning of residual process gases is underway,” the facility said.

Emergency services were deployed to the site, while equipment involved in commissioning work was shut down as a precaution.

The incident initially prompted reports of five people being hospitalized, while other workers with minor injuries received treatment at the scene.

The circumstances surrounding the fire and the full extent of the damage are being investigated.

The Amur Gas Chemical Complex is a major investment project involving Russian petrochemical company SIBUR and China’s Sinopec. The facility is being developed as one of the world’s largest producers of basic polymers.
