Kyrgyzstan Commissions Renovated Karakol Airport

Karakol airport in Kyrgyzstan"s Issyk-Kul Oblast has been officially opened on Wednesday.

The ceremonial opening of the Karakol airport was attended by President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Zhaparov, Issyk-Kul Oblast Governor Ulanbek Daliev, members of the Parliament and local residents, The Caspian Post reports, citing Kyrgyz media.

In his speech, Sadyr Zhaparov noted that after the collapse of the Union, domestic flights were stopped and did not operate.

"But now we are opening an international airport in Karakol. Our airport will be able to serve up to 250 passengers per hour. Numerous tourists come to Karakol, admiring our nature. We are ready to open our doors wide for guests who want to visit our country," the president said.

The total area of ​​the airport is about 8 thousand square meters.

Karakol international airport was founded in 1971, and the runway was put into operation in 1978. It could regularly receive aircraft such as Yak-40, L-410, An-2, An-26, An-28 and all types of helicopters.

The airport received its last charter flight in 2018 on the Dubai-Tashkent-Bishkek-Karakol route, on a business class aircraft model RJ. After that, the airport ceased to operate.

By the Decree of the Government of Kyrgyzstan on November 25, 2011, the Karakol airport was granted the status of international.
