Russia Reports Zika Virus Case in Woman Returning From Bali

Russia has reported an imported case of Zika virus infection in a woman who returned to Moscow after vacationing on the Indonesian island of Bali.

The infection was detected in September, Russia’s Federal Service for the Oversight of Consumer Protection and Welfare (Rospotrebnadzor) told TASS.

Rospotrebnadzor said the risk of the disease spreading within Russia had been ruled out. It explained that local mosquito species do not pose a significant epidemiological threat as carriers of tropical fever viruses.

Rospotrebnadzor also noted that Russian research institutions have developed domestic test systems for the rapid detection of the Zika virus. These tests are being actively used to distinguish Zika infection from other diseases during diagnosis.

Zika is a mosquito-borne viral infection that is primarily transmitted by infected Aedes mosquitoes. The virus can pose particular risks during pregnancy, as infection has been linked to birth defects.
