Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said the practice of granting citizenship to Armenians who do not live in the country must come to an end.

Pashinyan made the statement in parliament while answering questions from lawmakers during the presentation of the government’s program for 2026-2031, The Caspian Post reports, citing Sputnik Armenia.

He emphasized that the Constitution provides for simplified citizenship only for those who move to Armenia.

According to the prime minister, there are cases in practice where passports are issued to Armenians permanently residing abroad and are even sent to them at their place of residence.

“We are, pardon the expression, handing out citizenship left and right. Perhaps this was done previously because our country’s citizenship did not have a high rating, but today it is improving. Moreover, we need to bring our legal practice into line with the Constitution,” Pashinyan noted.
