Iranian MP Rejects Hopes for Improved US Relations Under Trump
Ebrahim Rezaei, a prominent Iranian lawmaker and key member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, has expressed doubts about any potential improvement in U.S.-Iran relations following Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 U.S. presidential election.
Ebrahim Rezaei, a prominent member of Iran's Parliament and a key figure on the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, has downplayed any hopes for improved relations with the United States following Donald Trump's victory in the 2024 US presidential election.
Rezaei highlighted the enduring influence of pro-Israel lobbying groups in Washington as a major barrier to meaningful diplomatic progress between the two countries. He argued that this influence has consistently led to irrational actions by the United States in its dealings with Iran, The Caspian Post reports, citing foreign media.
“We have not seen much rationality in the actions of the Americans over the years, as they are heavily influenced by Israeli interests,” Rezaei stated. “We do not harbour optimism about negotiations or reducing tensions with the US at this time.”
Despite the widespread belief that Trump’s previous tenure posed a serious threat to Tehran, Rezaei noted that little has changed in US-Iran relations under President Joe Biden, reinforcing his skepticism about any future shifts in US policy.
The Iranian lawmaker further emphasized that Trump no longer holds any significant leverage over Iran due to the extensive sanctions already imposed on the country. “All kinds of sanctions have been applied. The US must change its approach if it hopes for a different outcome,” Rezaei explained. “Otherwise, a ‘Trump 2.0’ administration would be no different from Biden’s.”
Earlier, reports from CNN and The Wall Street Journal indicated that a second Trump presidency could lead to even tougher measures against Iran, with Trump expected to revive a maximum pressure campaign.
