Kakha Kaladze, the Secretary General of Georgia's ruling Georgian Dream party and Mayor of Tbilisi, condemned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday for imposing sanctions on Georgian officials.

Kaladze accused Zelenskyy of "serving foreign interests" in his decision to target 20 Georgian individuals, The Caspian Post reports, citing Georgian media.

In his press comments, Kaladze criticised Zelenskyy while reaffirming Tbilisi City Hall’s “continued support” for Ukrainian refugees in Georgia.

"My answer is very simple - I put myself in the position of this person. I do not wish even for an enemy to be in the position he is in today. He does not belong to himself, his family, or, most importantly, Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. He serves the interests of another country”, Kaladze asserted.

He further expressed confidence that Ukrainian citizens would “soon realise whose support has led to the misfortunes happening in Ukraine today”.

The sanctions, enacted by Zelenskyy this week, target 20 Georgian officials and citizens, including Kaladze, Bidzina Ivanishvili, the Honorary Chair and founder of the GD, and Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.

The measures, which came following the Georgian Government's decision last week to postpone the country’s European Union accession talks until 2028, bar the sanctioned individuals from entering Ukraine, conducting business, and accessing financial assets in the country.
