Gazprom has accumulated a record 73.296 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas in Russia’s underground storage facilities ahead of the coming winter, the state-owned energy company announced Wednesday.
“On October 8, the company 100% fulfilled its target for refilling underground gas storage facilities for the winter season,” Gazprom said in a statement. “The operational gas reserve has reached 73.296 bcm, which marks an absolute historical record for the domestic gas industry,” The Caspian Post reports, citing TASS.
The company stressed that maintaining substantial gas reserves in underground storage facilities is essential for meeting peak winter demand. It added that, in the event of a sudden drop in temperatures, Gazprom can rapidly increase gas supplies to consumers.
Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller previously said that consumers in Russia and Belarus could approach the upcoming winter with confidence, as the energy system is fully prepared to withstand the lowest temperatures.
