Georgia Plans $342 Million Rail Upgrade for Middle Corridor

Georgia plans to invest 890 million lari (about $341.9 million) in railway infrastructure development under the Middle Corridor over the next four years, from 2027 to 2030.

The figures are outlined in Georgia’s draft state budget for 2027, prepared by the country’s Ministry of Finance, according to Report.

Under the plan, Georgia would allocate 250 million lari each in 2027 and 2028, followed by 160 million lari in 2029 and 230 million lari in 2030.

The project will be implemented by Georgia’s Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development. Its main goals are to improve the efficiency of the country’s railway network along the Middle Corridor, officially known as the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, while strengthening its resilience to climate change and improving financial sustainability.

As part of the investment, Georgian Railway is also expected to acquire 45 new mainline electric freight locomotives and 10 modern electric multiple-unit (EMU) passenger trains.

The plans also include construction of a new electrical substation, further supporting the modernization and capacity of Georgia’s railway infrastructure along the strategic Europe-Asia transport route.
