Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has made his first public appearance since the recent escalation in tensions between Iran and Israel.

Khamenei attended a ceremony marking the eve of Ashura, one of the most sacred days in the Shiite Islamic tradition, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, The Caspian Post reports, citing Iranian media.

In a video shared by state media, the supreme leader was seen at the Imam Khomeini Hussainiya, a cultural and religious center in Tehran, during the traditional mourning rituals. The accompanying caption described the footage as “a moment from the appearance of the Leader of the [Islamic] Revolution during the Ashura night ceremony.”
