A US Congress report released last year estimates that Iran possesses roughly 5,000-6,000 naval mines.

The report, published after a 12-day conflict between Iran, Israel, and the United States in June 2025, examined the potential impact on oil and gas markets due to blockages in the Strait of Hormuz, The Caspian Post reports via foreign media.

It notes that in 2019, Tehran had an arsenal of over 5,000 naval mines, which is estimated to have increased slightly to around 6,000 by 2025.

According to the US report, Iran’s underwater arsenal includes magnetic mines that attach to a ship’s hull, moored mines that float below the surface and detonate on contact, and bottom mines that rest on the seabed and explode when a vessel passes nearby.
