A woman in Kazakhstan’s Akmola Region has been sentenced after her infant died while she was breastfeeding under the influence of alcohol.

The incident occurred in the Akkol district, where the woman reportedly fell asleep while breastfeeding, according to Zakon.kz.

After waking up, she found that the baby was unresponsive. Emergency medical workers arrived and determined that the infant had died from suffocation.

The Akkol District Court reviewed the criminal case.

The woman admitted guilt and expressed remorse, which the court considered a mitigating circumstance. Her state of alcohol intoxication was treated as an aggravating circumstance.

The court sentenced her to one year and six months of restricted freedom under probation supervision.
