Death Toll Rises to Five After Building Collapse in Türkiye's Istanbul

The death toll from the collapse of a residential building in Maltepe district in Türkiye's Istanbul city has risen to five, while search-and-rescue operations at the scene have been called off.

Earlier reports said two people had been killed and 10 rescued from the rubble. All those involved were Turkish citizens, TRT Haber reports.

According to the Istanbul Governor’s Office, the building was constructed in 1987 and consisted of a ground floor and six upper floors. The ground floor was used as a workplace, while the upper floors contained 12 apartments.

Population registry records show that 33 people were registered as living in the building, including 14 registered in the four apartments directly affected by the collapse. Some residents registered at the building were outside the city when the incident occurred.
