Russia's Volgograd Refinery Halts Crude Processing After Drone Attack

Russia’s Volgograd oil refinery completely halted crude oil processing on October 2 after equipment was damaged in a drone attack, according to two industry sources, The Caspian Post reports, citing Reuters.

The shutdown is expected to further worsen a fuel shortage in Russia linked to a series of attacks on the country’s oil refineries.

The regional administration, citing Governor Andrey Bocharov, said the region’s industrial infrastructure had come under a large-scale drone attack but did not specify which facilities were affected.

Ukraine and Russia have intensified strikes on each other’s energy infrastructure as efforts to end the war, which has now entered its fifth year, have failed to make progress.

The Volgograd refinery was previously seriously damaged in drone attacks on May 29 and July 31.

According to Lukoil’s website, the refinery has an annual crude processing capacity of about 14 million tons, equivalent to 280,000 barrels per day. This represents roughly 5% of Russia’s total refining capacity.
