Amid shifting global power dynamics and growing US pressure on Europe and the Middle East, Türkiye and Spain are emerging as potential leaders of a new regional coalition in the Mediterranean.
The article references expert Canan Tercan, who observes that many nations find themselves at a "strategic crossroads" due to US President Donald Trump’s policies, The Caspian Post reports, citing local media.
“The White House administration aims to weaken the European Union both in energy and defense sectors,” Tercan explained.
Given this landscape, she argues that a closer partnership between Spain and Türkiye represents the most pragmatic and strategic move forward.
“A new alliance led by Ankara and Madrid could bolster regional security and serve as a catalyst for economic independence for numerous nations,” the article notes.
Tercan points to key developments supporting the coalition’s potential, such as Türkiye’s agreements with Libya and Spain’s investments in Mediterranean ports and renewable energy projects. Both countries are also expanding relations with African and Middle Eastern states.
“Joint efforts to secure maritime zones, cooperation in developing strategically critical natural resource fields, and well-developed logistics and energy infrastructures could make the Türkiye-Spain alliance a more effective platform than BRICS,” Tercan said.
“This alliance could become a genuine alternative to the European Union. Timely and prudent moves in the Mediterranean have the potential to shift the global balance of power.”
