Armenia’s detained former President Robert Kocharyan has been brought to the Anti-Corruption Court in Yerevan.

A court hearing will be held concerning the events of March 1, 2008, one of the most consequential episodes in Armenia’s recent political history, according to Sputnik Armenia.

Kocharyan was arrested on August 27 and remanded in custody for two months.

The March 1, 2008 events followed Armenia’s presidential election in February that year. Opposition supporters led by Armenia’s first president, Levon Ter-Petrosyan, disputed the official election results and launched indefinite protests in Freedom Square.

On the morning of March 1, police forcibly dispersed the protest camp. Demonstrations later moved to the area around the Alexander Myasnikyan monument, where clashes broke out between protesters and security forces, including internal troops.

Authorities deployed the army in Yerevan and declared a state of emergency.

Ten people - eight civilians and two police officers - were killed during the violence, while hundreds were injured.

The so-called “March 1 case,” which examines the use of force and allegations concerning the constitutional order, remains a major political and legal case in Armenia.
