A court in Yerevan has ordered the two-month pretrial detention of Sedrak Kocharyan, who was detained alongside his father, Armenian ex-President Robert Kocharyan, in a case involving allegations of bribery and abuse of power.

Sedrak Kocharyan’s lawyer, Aleksandr Kochubayev, confirmed the court’s decision, arguing that the case amounted to politically motivated and unlawful prosecution, Kommersant reports.

“We are dealing with extrajudicial persecution, as in some cases the statute of limitations has expired, while in others the charges were fabricated,” the lawyer said. “It can be concluded that this prosecution has an illegal political context.”

Armenia’s Anti-Corruption Committee earlier announced the detention of Robert Kocharyan and his son in Yerevan.

According to prosecutors, the ex-president is facing charges including abuse of official powers, accepting bribes and money laundering. The investigation reportedly covers the period of Kocharyan’s presidency from 2004 to 2009.

Other individuals named in the case include Armenian ex-President Serzh Sargsyan, former Yerevan Mayor Gagik Beglaryan and several others.
