Azerbaijan Becomes Internet Transit Hub in New Deal With Armenia’s Telecom Operator

Azerbaijan's AzerTelecom and Telecom Armenia have signed bilateral agreements to enable a new pathway for international internet connectivity to Armenia via Azerbaijan - a move aimed at strengthening regional digital infrastructure and diversifying telecom routes across the South Caucasus.

Under the agreement, AzerTelecom - a leading backbone internet provider in the region - will expand its global connectivity reach and increase the number of countries integrated into its international traffic network. The company will also begin providing internet transit services toward Armenia using its existing high-capacity infrastructure, The Caspian Post reports via Azertac.

The deal with Telecom Armenia is expected to enhance routing flexibility and improve resilience for cross-border data flows, reducing reliance on limited connectivity corridors in the region.

Beyond direct connectivity, the agreement reflects a broader trend toward infrastructure diversification in Eurasian telecom networks. By opening additional transit routes, operators aim to reduce bottlenecks, improve service stability, and support faster international data exchange.

Such arrangements can play a key role in ensuring more stable internet performance, particularly in regions where geopolitical and geographic constraints have historically limited routing options.

For AzerTelecom, the agreement aligns with its ongoing efforts to position itself as a key digital transit hub between Europe and Asia. The company is actively developing the transcontinental “Digital Silk Way” initiative - a project designed to establish a modern digital corridor spanning multiple regions and enhancing global data exchange capacity.

Azerconnect Group, the parent organization of AzerTelecom, operates as part of NEQSOL Holding, which has diversified interests across telecommunications, energy, and technology sectors in multiple countries.
