Parviz Shahbazov, Azerbaijani Minister of Energy, met with Vladanka Andreeva, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan, on the occasion of the completion of her mission in the country.
The discussions focused on cooperation between Azerbaijan and the UN in the fields of energy and sustainable development, The Caspian Post reports, citing the Energy Ministry.
Minister Shahbazov highlighted that energy efficiency and renewable energy remain key priorities in the country’s collaboration on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as in the ministry’s own initiatives.
According to him, Azerbaijan, in addition to hosting COP29, has strengthened its leadership in the global climate agenda with consistent policies and initiatives in green energy and energy transition. The meeting hailed the new Nationally Defined Contribution (NDC) announced by Azerbaijan at COP30, which provides for a commitment to reduce emissions by 40 by 2035.
The meeting also touched upon the development of the SDG7 Roadmap for Azerbaijan. They also discussed preparations of the side event on energy on the margins of the 82nd session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) scheduled to take place in Baku next April.
During the meeting, the sides exchanged views on the activities of the UNIDO-ECO Clean Energy Center, the development of renewable energy sources in Azerbaijan, the concept of hydrogen, interconnector projects on interregional electricity, as well as the decarburization of the oil and gas sector, and the upcoming events within the cooperation with the UN.
