Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said that a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan would dramatically transform the political atmosphere in the South Caucasus, opening the door to historic opportunities for the broader region.
The president made the remarks while speaking to journalists aboard his flight back from a visit to Azerbaijan, The Caspian Post reports via local media.
“Peace and stability in the South Caucasus benefit everyone,” Erdoğan stated. “The diplomatic framework of the ongoing peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia has already been finalized. As a result of negotiations held in Brussels, Moscow, and Tbilisi at the end of 2024, the final version of the peace agreement has been agreed upon.”
Commenting on Armenia’s evolving stance, Erdoğan noted Yerevan’s increasing willingness to engage in regional economic projects, particularly the Zangezur Corridor-an overland route linking Azerbaijan with its exclave of Nakhchivan and further into Türkiye.
“Although Armenia initially opposed the Zangezur Corridor, it has begun to show a more flexible stance, recognizing the potential for economic integration. The development of this region presents an opportunity not just for Azerbaijan, but also for Armenia, for Türkiye, Iran, and other neighboring countries,” he said.
Erdoğan also highlighted the unique relationship between Türkiye and Azerbaijan.
“Our ties with Azerbaijan are unlike those with any other country. What we share is not just friendship, but true brotherhood. The saying ‘one nation, two states’ is not an empty slogan-it reflects a profound truth rooted in shared history and real solidarity. We have proven this time and again. That’s why we cannot remain indifferent to developments in this region,” he added.
