A concerning environmental incident is unfolding along the Caspian Sea coast, where the number of dead seals has risen to 850.
The number of dead seals found along the Caspian Sea coast has now risen to 850, following the discovery of an additional 115 carcasses in the Aktau recreation area.
The bodies were transported to Kuryk Port for further investigation, The Caspian Post reports, citing Kazakh media.
Andrey Rutskoy, acting chief of the Mangistau region’s fishery inspection department, stated that a working group consisting of inspectors, ecologists, local authorities, and public association representatives is actively investigating the affected beaches. He noted that some rocky beaches are difficult to access, and the team will need to travel on foot to reach them.
Rutskoy also mentioned that it is no longer possible to collect samples from the latest seal carcasses, as they are in advanced stages of decomposition (3rd and 4th stages). The results of the samples taken from the first group of carcasses in late October are still pending.
