Green Energy to Reach 54% Share by 2030

Preventing environmental threats is a key objective focused on minimizing or eliminating harmful environmental impacts.

The Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change, Aziz Abdukhakimov, attended the 69th GEF Council Meeting, held in Washington, The Caspian Post reports citing UzA.

According to Mr. Abdukhakimov, several measures are being implemented in Uzbekistan to combat environmental threats. In particular, a large-scale reforestation campaign is underway on the dried-up bottom of the Aral Sea.

Two million hectares of land have been turned into green zones to date. As part of the nationwide “Yashil Makon” project, it is planned to increase the area of green zones by 30%, and 200 million trees are planted annually. By 2030, it is planned to increase the share of green energy to 54%. Work is underway to facilitate the transition to renewable energy sources and zero-emission transport.

In addition, it is proposed to adopt several resolutions of the UN General Assembly, including a resolution on the restoration of forests and lands for 2027-2036.

The Council decided to hold the 8th GEF Assembly and the 71st GEF Council Meeting in Samarkand in 2026. In turn, Aziz Abdukhakimov expressed sincere gratitude on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan, noting that significant progress has been made in shaping Uzbekistan’s environmental agenda with the support of the GEF.
