A widespread blackout struck Tbilisi and much of Georgia on the evening of August 5, leaving large areas of the country without electricity and causing disruptions to railway services.

The power failure began around 8:15 p.m. local time, affecting the capital as well as most of the country's regions, according to media reports.

The outage impacted the rail network, interrupting train operations on several routes due to the sudden loss of power.

Authorities have not yet provided an official statement or disclosed the cause behind the nationwide incident.

This event marks the second major blackout to hit Georgia in less than two weeks, following a previous power failure on July 24-25.

Preliminary investigations into that earlier incident indicated it was caused by a fault on a high-voltage transmission line located in the western Imereti region, which was further aggravated by a failure in the automatic protection systems.
