Ships belonging to Israel and countries considered unfriendly by Iran, as well as vessels carrying military cargo, could be barred from passing through the Strait of Hormuz under a new Iranian security bill.
Hassan Ghashghavi, spokesman for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security Committee, announced the proposed restrictions, Tasnim reports.
“Ships belonging to unfriendly states, as well as those carrying out military actions against us or transporting military cargo, will be unable to pass through the Strait of Hormuz,” Ghashghavi said.
Under the proposed legislation, vessels from other countries would need to obtain special permission from the General Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces to transit the strategic waterway. The requirements would be set out in the new law.
Ghashghavi said the bill has already been reviewed by the relevant parliamentary committee and is awaiting consideration in an open session of the Iranian Parliament.
If approved by lawmakers, the legislation would then be submitted to Iran’s Guardian Council for review and approval.
