Iran’s Navy said on Friday that it had destroyed an “enemy unmanned vessel” operating east of the Strait of Hormuz, while two other tankers were damaged and caught fire after striking naval mines in areas Tehran considers restricted and unsafe.

According to a statement published by Iran’s official IRNA news agency, the unmanned vessel was hit and destroyed early Friday while operating in an area east of the strait monitored by the Iranian Navy, The Caspian Post reports.

The statement did not disclose the vessel’s identity, its operator or further details about its activities.

Separately, the Iranian Navy said two tankers had switched off their tracking systems and continued sailing through restricted and unsafe areas east of the Strait of Hormuz despite repeated warnings.

The vessels subsequently struck naval mines, sustaining damage and catching fire, the statement said.

Earlier, the naval forces of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that two tankers had been stopped in the Strait of Hormuz while attempting to pass through unauthorized routes.

In a statement carried by Tasnim News Agency, the IRGC Navy said one of the tankers was located in the eastern section of the strait and the other in its western section.

It claimed that both vessels had switched off their navigation and positioning systems and were operating with the support of the US military.

According to the IRGC statement, the tankers ignored several radio warnings and entered areas considered unsafe by Iran before being intercepted near the southern shores of the strait.
