Iran has requested clarification from Germany regarding the role of the Ramstein airbase in the ongoing US-Israeli war on Iran, according to Tehran’s ambassador to Berlin, Majid Nili.
Nili said Iranian officials had formally asked German authorities to explain how the base is being used, The Caspian Post reports, citing AFP.
“We have asked them to clarify the role of Ramstein,” he said, adding that its involvement remains unclear to Tehran. “So far, we have not received any response,” he said.
The ambassador noted that Iran believes the US' use of the airbase in western Germany could potentially violate United Nations Resolution 3314. The resolution states that territory made available to one country must not be used to carry out an act of aggression against a third state.
“We do not yet know whether Ramstein falls into that category or not,” Nili added.
Ramstein serves as a major hub for US military operations, hosting thousands of American personnel and functioning as the US Air Force headquarters for both Europe and Africa.
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said earlier this week that he sees “no reason at present to doubt the legality” of Ramstein’s use in the conflict involving Iran.
In recent weeks, German officials have responded to inquiries about the base by emphasizing that US military activities there are regulated under existing bilateral agreements and treaties.
