A specialized interdistrict criminal court in Kazakhstan's Mangystau Region has sentenced an Iranian minor to 10 years in prison for drug smuggling.

The teenager arrived in Aktau in May on a flight from the Iranian city of Gorgan, carrying 113 capsules containing opium inside his stomach. The capsules had a combined weight of more than one kilogram, Zakon.kz reports.

The illegal substances were discovered by officers of Kazakhstan's National Security Committee.

The court found the teenager guilty of drug smuggling, as well as the illegal acquisition, possession and transportation of narcotics with the intent to sell them.

The verdict has entered into legal force.

The prosecutor's office also reminded the public that Kazakhstan's legislation envisages prison sentences ranging from five to 20 years for involvement in illegal drug trafficking.
