American journalist Laurence Norman has suggested that a new round of talks between Iran and the European Union is likely to take place in Geneva in January.
In a post on his X account, Norman, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, wrote that the E3-EU/Iran discussions will likely focus on the Iranian nuclear issue, The Caspian Post reports.
"I gather there is likely to be another round of E3-EU/Iran contacts in Jan probably again in Geneva," the reporter said.
Meanwhile, Norman said that "Not yet clear if before or after Trump’s inauguration on January 20."
He posted "Iran nuclear" alongside his post to say that the talks will likely focus on the Iranian nuclear issue.
In 2018, Iran activated the dispute resolution mechanism within the Joint Commission of the JCPOA, involving foreign ministers from the remaining signatories of the agreement. In response, the members issued a statement detailing 11 commitments aimed at compensating for the economic damages caused by the United States’ unilateral withdrawal and the re-imposition of sanctions on Iran.
For a year after the U.S. withdrawal, Iran adhered to its obligations under the JCPOA, hoping European nations would fulfill their promises to mitigate the effects of Washington’s exit.
Eight rounds of negotiations have been held in Vienna to discuss the resumption of the JCPOA’s implementation, involving Iran, the European Union, and the remaining signatories, with the U.S. delegation participating indirectly. Despite these efforts, the talks have been stalled.
