Iran and the EU3 (UK, Germany and France) were close to reaching an agreement on the Iranian nuclear program, but the US intervened and the European countries backed down under pressure from Washington.
This was stated by the President of the Islamic Republic, Masoud Pezeshkian, The Caspian Post informs via TASS.
"In New York, when we talked about snapback with the Europeans, we were pretty close to an agreement, but then they talked with the Americans and changed their minds, looking for excuses," he said on state television upon his return from New York.
As the Iranian president noted, the US simply wants to see Iran weak. "If the nuclear issue is on the agenda today, then tomorrow they will raise non-nuclear issues because they don't need a strong Iran," Pezeshkian emphasized.
Earlier, the Iranian president said that the United States was prepared to give Iran a three-month grace period before restoring UN Security Council sanctions, but in exchange demanded that it hand over all enriched uranium.
The UN Security Council rejected a draft resolution proposed by Russia and China that would have extended UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which supported the Iran nuclear deal, for six months. According to Barbara Woodward, the UK's Permanent Representative to the UN, UN sanctions against Iran will be reimposed at the end of this week.
