Russia has called on Azerbaijan and Iran to exercise “maximum restraint” and avoid steps that could deepen tensions in the region following reports of a drone attack on Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

In a statement, Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, urged both sides - described by Moscow as strategic partners - to refrain from rash actions and avoid creating new dividing lines that could undermine the principle of good-neighborly relations, The Caspian Post reports via the ministry.

Zakharova stressed that amid the current tensions it is crucial to carefully verify all circumstances surrounding incidents that could lead to further escalation. She said Russia is ready to actively assist in finding ways to quickly end bloodshed in the region and help restore political and diplomatic dialogue based on international law, balanced interests, and mutual respect.

The Russian Foreign Ministry also expressed serious concern over what it described as the dangerous escalation across the Middle East. Zakharova criticized the actions of the United States and Israel, accusing them of carrying out an “unprovoked and illegal armed aggression” against Iran in violation of international law and the United Nations Charter.
