Expert Suggests Second NPP Could Be Built in Eastern Kazakhstan

The second nuclear power plant (NPP) may be constructed in the eastern part of Kazakhstan, Timur Zhantikin, the director general of Nuclear Power Plants of Kazakhstan JSC told Jibek Joly TV Channel.

He said the potential nuclear power plant should be built in areas with minimal seismic activity, safe from natural disasters and far from densely populated districts. Areas with sources of water are preferred, The Caspian Post reports citing Kazinform.

He believes the power plant should be built in areas facing power shortages.

Zhantikin also added many years ago, the National Nuclear Center together with Japan Atomic Power Company studied the feasibility of building nuclear power capacity in Kazakhstan. Two regions, East and South Kazakhstan, were finally considered as potential locations for the nuclear power plant construction.

He stressed such works were already conducted in Kazakhstan and that data could actually be updated.

As earlier reported, Kazakhstan may start building the second and third nuclear power plants.

Minister of Energy Almasadam Satkaliyev reported on Wednesday at the Government’s weekly meeting, how many Kazakhstanis would be involved in the nuclear power plant construction in Kazakhstan.
