A citizen of Kazakhstan has been detained in Germany on suspicion of spying for Russia.
The arrest was carried out by the Federal Prosecutor General in Berlin. The suspect, a 47-year-old man, is accused of acting as an agent for Russian intelligence services and may have also been involved in preparations for possible sabotage activities, The Caspian Post reports via foreign media.
Investigators claim the man primarily took photographs using his smartphone and sent them to a contact linked to Russian intelligence. The images reportedly included military convoys on highways, vehicles used by politicians and security services, government buildings, and defense industry facilities, mostly located in Berlin.
The photographed locations were largely publicly accessible, but this does not rule out criminal liability under espionage laws.
In one of the incidents under investigation, the suspect is also said to have captured military vehicles belonging to another NATO member state, which could introduce additional legal implications under alliance-related regulations involving NATO.
