A major landfill fire has engulfed parts of Atyrau, Kazakhstan, filling the air with thick smoke and a strong burning smell across the city.

The blaze erupted early morning on April 7 at a municipal waste site, with residents reporting the smell of smoke in multiple districts, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.

Authorities received the first signal about the incident at 08:30 (GMT+6) and quickly dispatched emergency services to the scene.

According to local officials, firefighting teams are currently working to extinguish the flames and contain the spread of the fire. The total area affected is still being assessed.

The cause of the fire remains unclear, but officials confirmed that there have been no reported injuries so far.
