Kazakhstan is considering introducing mandatory health insurance for foreign tourists, a move that could require visitors to have coverage for emergency medical care during their stay.

The proposed insurance policy could cover emergency and urgent medical treatment, medical transportation and repatriation, Tengri reports.

Authorities are also considering a digital system to verify whether foreign visitors have valid insurance. The process could involve the exchange of information between insurance companies and government agencies.

The initiative has been included in a draft Insurance Market Development Program through 2030.

As part of the broader reform, Kazakhstan is also proposing a unified model for mandatory insurance and a risk-based approach to setting insurance premiums.

If adopted, the measure could introduce new requirements for foreign travelers while helping ensure access to emergency medical services and reducing financial risks associated with treatment and medical evacuation.
