Kazakhstan's Aktau Becomes Swan Paradise on Caspian Coast

The shores of the Caspian Sea in Aktau, Kazakhstan have transformed into a breathtaking winter spectacle, as thousands of swans settle along the coastline, drawing crowds of residents and visitors alike.

Locals say the graceful white birds have not wintered in such numbers for years. This season, however, nearly a thousand swans have gathered along the waterfront - stretching from the Fourth Microdistrict to Primorsky - creating a scene many are calling magical, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.

“If they used to winter at Lake Karakol, this year they chose the Caspian Sea,” said a local resident who captured the stunning sight on video. “It’s been a long time since we’ve seen so many swans here. They are truly delighting the city.”

Swans Come Ashore for Food

Residents note that the birds appear hungry and have begun approaching people along the beach. Some swans have become so accustomed to human presence that they take food directly from visitors’ hands.

“Every day more birds come ashore. Yesterday there were 15-20 walking along the coast, and now the entire shoreline is filled with swans. It’s an incredible sight for both adults and children,” one eyewitness said.

The growing flocks have turned winter in Aktau into what locals describe as a real-life “swan fairy tale.”

Residents Urge Proper Feeding

Citizens are encouraging those who come to admire the birds to bring appropriate food - and avoid feeding them bread.

“They’re preparing for a long flight and need nutritious food,” residents explained. Recommended options include grains, corn, oats, barley, and vegetables. “Every bit of energy matters for them.”

For now, the swans continue to enjoy mild days along the Caspian coast, posing for photos and gliding across the water - true winter stars of Aktau and, as locals joke, a little bit gourmets too.
