A minor has been detained in Ukraine’s city of Sumy on suspicion of sending a knowingly false report about a planned terrorist attack at a shopping center in Astana.
The detention was carried out as part of a joint operation involving Kazakhstan’s Interior Ministry and Ukraine’s cyber police, according to Kazakhstan’s Interior Ministry.
During a search, officers seized mobile phones, tablets, a laptop, a computer system unit and a bank card. Investigators also found evidence on the devices, including the account used to send the threat and the text of the message.
Kazakh authorities said the seized equipment is being examined to determine whether other people may have been involved.
The Interior Ministry also warned that false reports involving bomb threats, terrorism, hostage-taking or other risks to public safety can lead to serious legal consequences.
