UK’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan Fergus Auld has announced that the UK stands in support of Azerbaijan’s demands for justice following the killing and assault of Azerbaijanis in Russia.
The ambassador expressed deep concern over the incidents targeting Azerbaijanis in Russia, extended condolences to the victims’ families, conveyed solidarity with the Azerbaijani people during this challenging time, and affirmed support for Azerbaijan’s efforts to seek justice, The Caspian Post reports, citing the ambassador’s message on X.
On June 27, the Russian Federal Security Service carried out a raid in Yekaterinburg reportedly connected to a 2001 murder case. During the operation, up to 50 Azerbaijanis were detained, most of whom were later released. However, two Azerbaijani men were violently killed in their houses during the raid, several others suffered serious injuries, and nine individuals remained in custody.
Following the incident, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry summoned the Chargé d’Affaires of the Russian Embassy in Baku to issue a strong protest. Azerbaijan has called on Russian authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that all those responsible for the violence are swiftly held accountable.
