Russia Unleashes 90 Drones in Nighttime Strike on Ukraine, Kyiv Says

Russia launched a large-scale overnight assault on Ukraine, deploying 90 drones and an Iskander-M ballistic missile from multiple directions.

Ukrainian officials said the attack involved Shahed, Gerbera, and Italmas drones, as well as jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicles. The barrage also included Parodiya decoy drones designed to distract and overwhelm air defense systems, The Caspian Post reports via RBC Ukraine.

The Iskander-M ballistic missile was reportedly launched from the Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula, while drones were fired from several locations across Russia, including the Kursk, Bryansk, Oryol, Millerovo, Shatalovo, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk regions, as well as from occupied areas of Crimea and Ukraine’s Donetsk region.

According to preliminary military data, Ukrainian air defenses intercepted or suppressed 83 of 90 drones involved in the attack.

Despite the high interception rate, Ukrainian authorities reported that the ballistic missile and six attack drones successfully struck targets at seven separate locations. Debris from downed aerial targets was also recorded in nine additional areas.

Emergency and assessment operations continued throughout the morning as officials evaluated the consequences of the strikes.

The attack comes amid ongoing efforts by Ukraine to counter Russia’s drone campaign. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently stated that relay stations used to guide Shahed drones from Belarusian territory stopped operating on June 22, although it remains unclear whether the facilities were dismantled.

Zelenskyy also instructed Ukraine’s military and intelligence agencies to intensify preventive measures and target infrastructure used by Russia to support attacks on Ukrainian territory.
