Moscow came under a “large-scale” Ukrainian drone attack overnight, with several unmanned aerial vehicles reportedly reaching a major oil refinery in the Russian capital.

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said Russian air defense systems were actively repelling the attack and confirmed that multiple drones were intercepted during the night, The Caspian Post reports via Anews.

“Air defence forces are continuing to repel a large-scale attack. Several drones managed to reach MNPZ, a major refinery in the Russian capital,” Sobyanin wrote on Telegram, referring to a major refinery in the capital.

He later said that air defenses had destroyed more than 40 drones, adding that response teams were dealing with the aftermath but did not specify the extent of any damage.

A Reuters witness reported seeing flames and thick smoke rising over the Kapotnya district, where the refinery is located. Officials also said a shopping center sustained minor damage.

The strike marks one of several recent Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy infrastructure, which Kyiv has increasingly targeted in an effort to reduce Moscow’s oil revenues amid the ongoing war.

The attack on Moscow came as Russia launched renewed missile and drone strikes on Kyiv, with Ukrainian officials reporting ballistic missiles targeting the capital.

“The enemy is attacking the capital with ballistic missiles. Stay in safe places until the air raid alert is over,” said Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration.

Explosions were reported in Kyiv on June 18 early morning, while authorities in Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region confirmed that at least one person was killed in a separate drone strike. Air raid alerts were issued across much of the country.

Earlier in the week, a major Russian strike on Kyiv killed 10 people and damaged a centuries-old monastery, sparking condemnation from European leaders. Moscow denied deliberately targeting the site.

The latest wave of strikes adds to mounting pressure on Russia’s energy infrastructure, with repeated attacks on refineries contributing to reported fuel shortages.

Russia - one of the world’s largest oil producers - may even be forced to import fuel by sea as it struggles to stabilize domestic supply following sustained Ukrainian strikes.
