Türkiye Proposes Safe Shipping Routes in the Black Sea

Türkiye has proposed a moratorium on military operations in the Black Sea and measures to ensure the safety of commercial shipping, offering separate routes for civilian vessels from Russia and Ukraine.

Under the proposal, Ukrainian vessels would use a security corridor toward the Bosphorus Strait along the coasts of Romania and Bulgaria, while Russian ships would follow a route along the coasts of Georgia and Türkiye, according to Turkish newspaper Milliyet.

Consultations on the proposed moratorium are ongoing.

If an agreement is reached, the sides could sign a deal similar to the Black Sea Grain Initiative concluded in Istanbul in 2022. However, the proposed arrangement would cover all commercial vessels and require both sides to refrain from attacking civilian ships.
