Uzbekistan to Host 150th IPU Assembly

At the initiative of the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the 150th Anniversary Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) will be held in Uzbekistan.

The IPU Assembly, which brings together parliaments from nearly 190 countries, is held twice a year in countries with strong parliamentary experience and a commitment to sustainable development, The Caspian Post reports, citing Uzbek media.

Hosting the jubilee IPU Assembly in Uzbekistan will be a historic event, as it will be the first time such a gathering is held in Central Asia.

A meeting of the Organizing Committee for the 150th IPU Assembly was held at the Senate of the Oliy Majlis to discuss preparations for the event.

The meeting, chaired by Senate Chairperson Tanzila Narbayeva, was attended by deputies, senators, government representatives, and heads of ministries, agencies, and the Tashkent Hokimiyat.

It was noted that Uzbekistan reinstated its membership in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in 2017. Over the years, the country has gained significant experience in parliamentary affairs and sustainable development, with its achievements recognized by major international organizations and foreign states.

The central theme of the IPU Assembly, scheduled for April 5-9, will be “Parliamentary action for social development and justice”. The IPU committees plan to hold sessions on human rights protection, gender equality, scientific and technological development, and youth-related issues.

The Senate Chairperson emphasized the importance of proactive engagement and outlined the key tasks for ensuring the event is organized at the highest level.
