Armenian pediatric oncologist Gevorg Tamamyan has been named one of six candidates for the position of Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Tamamyan was nominated by Botswana, rather than Armenia, according to Sputnik Armenia.

The election for the WHO’s next Director-General is scheduled for May 2027. Alongside Tamamyan, candidates from Qatar, Spain and Indonesia are seeking the position, while two additional candidates have been nominated from within the WHO.

Tamamyan said on social media that he has devoted his professional career to pediatric oncology, focusing on expanding healthcare in regions with limited resources and insufficient access to medical services.

The WHO Director-General is elected by the World Health Assembly, with the successful candidate serving as the organization’s chief executive.
