Azerbaijan and Afghanistan have initiated talks to enhance cooperation on the Middle Corridor, aiming to boost regional trade and strengthen transport links that connect South Asia with Europe through the Caucasus.
Chairman of Azerbaijan Railways company (part of AZCON Holding) Rovshan Rustamov has met with Afghanistan’s Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Abdul Ghani Baradar at the Port of Baku to discuss strengthening regional connectivity and expanding transit and trade cooperation, The Caspian Post reports via local media.
The discussions centered around enhancing cargo transport along the South Asia-Caucasus-Europe corridor, with both sides emphasizing the strategic value of integrating Afghanistan into multimodal transport networks, particularly the Middle Corridor - a key transcontinental route linking Asia to Europe via the Caspian region.
Afghan representatives expressed a strong interest in accelerating the export of Afghan goods through Azerbaijani territory. In response, Azerbaijan Railways affirmed its readiness to support efficient delivery of Afghan products to European markets, highlighting the country’s growing role as a logistics hub bridging East and West.
The Middle Corridor is a key international transport and trade route that connects Asia and Europe through the South Caucasus and the Caspian Sea. Stretching from China and Central Asia, it passes through countries like Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Georgia before reaching Europe. This corridor offers a strategic alternative to traditional northern and southern routes, aiming to facilitate faster, more efficient trade by integrating rail, sea, and road networks. The Middle Corridor plays a vital role in boosting economic cooperation, regional connectivity, and the diversification of global supply chains.
