A court in Northern Cyprus has extended the detention of three Azerbaijani citizens arrested in connection with a shipwreck off the coast of Northern Cyprus by seven more days.

The three - Rashad Ibrahimov, Gadir Guliyev and Valeh Gumbatov - were detained as part of the investigation into the incident, Orkhan Hasanoglu, chairman of the Azerbaijan-Cyprus Friendship Society, said, according to Report.

Investigators have so far taken statements from more than 320 people.

The investigation is focusing on the vessel’s technical condition, including damage to its bow reportedly sustained on June 17, and subsequent repair work. Investigators are examining whether the damage and repairs contributed to the vessel’s sinking, whether the relevant authorities were notified about the repairs, and how many voyages the ship made afterward.

Underwater search operations are continuing, with authorities looking for the ship’s black box and Voyage Data Recorder (VDR).

Hasanoglu said investigators also plan to examine 17 parts of the vessel recovered from the water. Further checks are expected to be carried out in Türkiye, including at a ship repair facility in Adana.

The Azerbaijan-Cyprus Friendship Society said it is monitoring the investigation and the observance of the rights of the three Azerbaijani detainees. Hasanoglu stressed that the guilt of the detainees has not been established by a final court ruling that has entered into legal force.

The vessel sank off the coast of Kyrenia (Girne), Northern Cyprus, on August 30. A total of 239 people were rescued, while 15 people have been confirmed dead and the search for 13 missing passengers continues.

Nine people, including the three Azerbaijani citizens, have been detained in connection with the incident.
